Katrina and the Salvation Army

For those of you considering monetary donations to help the victims of Katrina, please consider the Salvation Army (link provided below). They really do apply your donation to the cause you're supporting, whereas, the Red Cross (RC) (a worthy organization, but one I've learned first hand misleads folks on it's fund raising) doesn't apply your donation to the cause you believe you're contributing to. Instead, monies collected go into the RC's national fund. The RC allocates annually, funds to respective states, regions, etc. The monies contributed on behalf of a specific cause DO NOT go to that cause, period. Ask any RC representative about it directly and they'll tell you the same. Anyway, didn't really mean to get on a soapbox, but there ya go... enough said.

Funn I've heard that the Salvos do exactly the same...pool the money and filter it out.

Maybe it's hard to know who to believe these days.

A wolf in sheepskin

Hey there!

Pooling the money is right, but sadly it isn't filtered out to the causes for which it was donated. When we went through a major tornado here a few years ago, the RC requested donations and, of course, everyone locally and in the surrounding states contributed generously. What was evident after a week, was the money was not going to the efforts here or to the people in serious need. The RC was asked directly by the TV media what's up with the money? The RC, being cornerd and asked directly (I say this with a smirk because there was much dancing around the question, which was continually repeated until it was answered) then told of how the money goes to the National fund and that monies being used now are from funds that had been allocated to the area. When pressed about the many millions of dollars that were donated for the local citizens, the RC thanked everyone for their generousity and said the monies would be used nationally where needed and they don't put back into the communities the donations given on their behalf, except of course, for the annual allocated monies already provided. Needless to say, the RC, to those of us who contributed generously, is no longer our favored charity for relief to an affected area or cause. I'd much rather donate to the Salvation Army or Catholic Charities, both of whom will provide the communities or whatever with the monies donated for that specific cause. I'm sure there are other agencies out there that operate the same way, but I'm not aware of them on a national level.

I hadn't heard that the Salvos were doing the same. Hummm...
